Permissions denied or keep resetting

The app says it is not allowed to use the microphone or system audio, or macOS asks again after an update. How to fix it.

Last updated

You may see The app is not allowed to use the microphone or The app is not allowed to record system audio. Allow it again, then try again.

On a Mac

  1. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security.
  2. In Microphone, switch on Transcript Audio.
  3. In Screen & System Audio Recording, switch on Transcript Audio under System Audio Recording Only (and in the main list too if you record video).
  4. Optionally, in Calendars, give Transcript Audio full access.
  5. Quit the app (menu bar icon > Quit) and open it again.

After an update

macOS may forget permissions when the app updates, because the app is not notarised yet. When that happens the app opens Check permissions with the line macOS asks again for permissions after an update. Allow each one again, then click Done.

If System Settings shows a switch on but recording is still silent, select Transcript Audio, remove it with the minus button, add it again with + from Applications, then quit and reopen the app.

Keeps asking for Screen Recording

macOS 15 and later re-ask for full screen recording from time to time. You only need it for video, or on macOS 13 to 14.1. Update to macOS 14.2 or later and use System Audio Recording Only for audio.

On Windows

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
  2. Switch on Microphone access.
  3. Switch on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
  4. Start the recording again.

If the switches are greyed out, your organisation controls them. Ask your IT team to allow microphone access for desktop apps.

Classic Outlook warning about a program accessing it? Make sure your antivirus is running and recognised by Windows Security, then allow the access.
