The app won't open

macOS says the app cannot be opened or checked, or Windows SmartScreen blocks the installer. How to open Transcript Audio safely the first time.

On a Mac

"Apple could not verify" or "Not Opened"

Transcript Audio comes from an independent developer and these first builds are not signed by Apple or Microsoft yet, so your computer asks you to confirm the app once. The download is fine.

  1. Open the downloaded .dmg file and drag Transcript Audio onto Applications.
  2. Open Transcript Audio from Applications. macOS says it cannot verify the app (on macOS 15: "Transcript Audio" Not Opened). Click Done, not Move to Bin.
  3. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security and scroll down to Security. Next to "Transcript Audio" was blocked to protect your Mac, click Open Anyway.
  4. Confirm with your password or Touch ID, then click Open. From now on the app opens normally.
IllustrationStep 2: click Done. The app is not deleted, and the next step opens it.
IllustrationStep 3: Open Anyway is at the bottom of Privacy & Security, under Security.

On macOS 13 and 14 there is a shortcut: right-click (or Control-click) the app in Applications, choose Open, then click Open again. From macOS 15 Sequoia this shortcut no longer works, so use Open Anyway.

No Open Anyway button? Open Terminal and run this command, then open the app:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Transcript Audio.app"

It opens, but nothing appears

The app has no main window at first: it runs from the menu bar. Look for its icon at the top right. If the menu bar is crowded, see The menu bar or tray icon is missing.

Running it straight from the disk image? Drag it to Applications first and open it from there.

On Windows

"Windows protected your PC"

Transcript Audio comes from an independent developer and these first builds are not signed by Apple or Microsoft yet, so your computer asks you to confirm the app once. The download is fine.

Your browser may say the file isn't commonly downloaded. Keep it: in Edge, open the ... menu on the download, choose Keep, then Show more > Keep anyway; in Chrome, choose Keep.

  1. Open the installer. If Windows protected your PC appears (Microsoft Defender SmartScreen), click More info.
  2. Check the app name says Transcript Audio, then click Run anyway.
  3. The app installs and opens by itself, with no administrator prompt. You only do this once for each installer file.
IllustrationRun anyway only appears after you click More info.

It opens, but nothing appears

The app runs from the system tray. Click the small arrow (^) at the bottom right of the taskbar to find its icon. See The menu bar or tray icon is missing.

Antivirus removed part of it

If your antivirus quarantined transcript-helper.exe, restore it or allow it, then reinstall from the download page.
