No audio, or only one side

Fix a silent recording, a transcript with only your voice, only their voice, or words recorded twice, on Mac and Windows.

Only my voice: the other side is silent

On a Mac

  1. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording.
  2. Under System Audio Recording Only, switch on Transcript Audio.
  3. Quit the app (menu bar icon > Quit) and open it again. This step matters: the change only applies after a restart.
  4. On macOS 13 to 14.1, switch on full Screen Recording instead.
IllustrationThe switch to check: Transcript Audio under System Audio Recording Only.

If it is already on but the other side is still silent, select Transcript Audio in that list, remove it with the minus button, add it again with +, then quit and reopen the app.

On Windows

Windows needs no permission for this, so the cause is usually the sound device:

  • The call plays through a device the app cannot capture, such as some Bluetooth headsets or virtual sound cards. Use the laptop's speakers or headphones set as the default output in Settings > System > Sound, and set the call app to use the default device.
  • The other side is very quiet, or the browser tab is muted. Check the call volume.

Only their voice: I am missing

On a Mac

Check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone has Transcript Audio on, and that System Settings > Sound > Input is the microphone you speak into.

On Windows

Check Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone has Let desktop apps access your microphone on, and that Settings > System > Sound > Input is the microphone you speak into.

Nothing at all

The app says No microphone was found or No speaker or headphone output was found: plug the device in or check your sound settings, then start again.

Their words appear twice, or on my lines

Your microphone is hearing your speakers. Use headphones, or turn on Reduce echo from speakers in Settings > Recording (this makes the other side a little quieter).
