Staying hidden when you share your screen

The Questions panel and the app windows are hidden from screen sharing and screenshots by default. The limits on Mac and Windows.

Last updated

By default, the Questions as you go panel and the app's windows are kept out of screen shares, screen recordings and screenshots. Answers never appear in notifications.

The settings

  • Show the Questions as you go panel when I share my screen (in Settings > Privacy): off by default.
  • The eye button on the panel changes it for this meeting only. The panel shows Hidden when you share your screen or Visible when you share your screen.
  • Hide this app from recordings and screen sharing (in Settings > Privacy): on by default, for the other app windows.

The limits on each system

On a Mac

Most apps honour the hidden setting, but some newer screen-sharing and screenshot apps on macOS 15 and later, including newer Zoom and Teams screen sharing, can still show the panel.

On Windows

On Windows 10 version 2004 or later, and Windows 11, the panel is hidden from Zoom, Teams and Google Meet screen sharing, screen recorders and screenshots. Older Windows versions show a black box in its place.

Taking screenshots of the app

While Hide this app from recordings and screen sharing is on, screenshots of the app come out blank or black. To screenshot it for support, turn it off in Settings > Privacy, take the screenshot, then turn it back on.

The menu bar or tray icon and notifications can't be hidden. Hide the Dock icon while recording (or Hide the taskbar icon while recording on Windows) in Settings > Appearance helps with the Dock or taskbar. A camera pointed at your screen will always see it.
