How meetings are detected
Transcript Audio starts recording when an app uses your microphone in a call. What counts, what is left out, and how to narrow it.
Last updated
The app watches for one thing: an app using your microphone. When an app has used it for 10 seconds, the app treats it as a call. No bot joins and nothing is added to the meeting.
What starts a recording
Settings > Recording > What starts a recording has two choices:
- Any app using the microphone (the default): if your microphone is live in a call, it records, whatever app you call from.
- Meeting apps and meeting pages only: just Zoom, Teams, Webex, Slack huddles, FaceTime, Discord, WhatsApp, and browsers on a meeting page such as Google Meet.
What never starts a recording
- Dictation and voice typing, Siri, and voice memo and recorder apps.
- Music and audio apps that hold the microphone, such as GarageBand, Logic, Audacity and OBS.
- Noise-suppression and virtual microphone apps that hold the microphone all day: Krisp, NVIDIA Broadcast, Voicemod and Elgato Wave Link are on Apps to ignore already.
- Transcript Audio itself.
- Anything you add to Apps to ignore (in Settings > Recording > Advanced).
Any other app that is not a meeting app stops counting after it has held the microphone for 3 hours without a break, so it cannot block your next call.
Adding an app
With Meeting apps and meeting pages only chosen, add any other call app under Also detect these apps, one per line:
On a Mac
Use the app id, for example com.example.app. A browser listed here counts on any page.
On Windows
Use the program name, for example app.exe. A browser listed here counts on any page.
Only calls in your calendar
Turn on Only record calls that are in my calendar (off by default) and only scheduled meetings are recorded: a call with no calendar event at the same time is skipped, whatever starts it, and a Call not recorded notification says so. Use Start recording to record it anyway. Leave it off if you take unplanned calls.
When recording stops
- When the call app lets go of the microphone for 30 seconds (Wait before stopping). A longer wait keeps one recording if a call drops and you rejoin.
- For Zoom and Microsoft Teams, a few seconds after the call window closes, even if the app still holds the microphone.
- If neither happens, after 5 minutes with no sound at all (Stop after this much silence; 0 turns it off).
- When you stop it yourself. After that, the rest of the call is not recorded unless you start it again.
